There is nothing quite like the flavor of herbs and veggies planted and grown by you with your own 2 fucking hands!
It's that time of year again. Time to envision your garden desires for the year. This is the time my daughter and I start picking our seeds to plant in either our small plot of earth or the containers on the patio.
We try to make the most out of the limited space we have at our home. We choose what we want that will add the most flavor and promise to our meals over the course of the growing and harvest season. Trial and error also drive what we choose to plant again and what we've realized didn't work. When something failed to thrive we often try a different area of the garden before deciding it may not be something to grow in our limited space.
I pot a lot of my herbs rather than put them in the garden. I like to group thyme, oregano, and sage in one planter because they just fucking go together. Basil is one that gets its own pot because it gets taller and more bushy than most of the others.
I have 2 types of rosemary and a decent sized lavender plant in my garden plot across the yard. They're perennial so get their own spot. They also are bushes so need more space to grow and spread out.
In the bigger garden bed I plant my veggies, but my strawberries are in there too because they need some space. I grow the ever bearing strawberries so that we can have some more than just in early spring. I always grow tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers at minimum because nothing beats the flavor of those grown in your own garden. That shit in the supermarket just don't equal the flavor of home grown.
We've started growing peppers, jalapenos, kale, and cilantro. As these are veggies we eat a lot of on the reg. We're going to try acorn squash and dill this year so I'll keep ya posted.
The big thing here is grow what you'll eat. You will appreciate it more if it is something you'd be buying at the store anyway. I take a lot of pride in making meals that incorporate shit I grow with my own 2 hands! So get out there and get dirty. Even if you only have a small space you can still grow something amazing. Show me your veggies, I'll show you mine!
